Pikolo was born in a beautiful village in the countryside. In fact, the whole village was made up of chicken farms. Farmers made their living by selling eggs and chicken-meat to the stores in big cities. So, the village was crowded with chickens and roosters. Even the symbol of the village was a handsome rooster.
Pikolo was one of the new chicks of BIGMAMA hen. He was the only rooster of his brood. Their mother, BIGMAMA was a big, brown, strong hen. She was famous for making two eggs in one day. Pikolo was a happy little rooster and loved by his siblings and friends.
BIGMAMA hen was an attentive mother. She kept an eye on her chicks all the time. Even the farm dogs and cats were afraid to get close to her chicks. She had the reputation to beat the ones that got near her chicks. When BIGMAMA was around, other hens felt safe about their chicks too.
Pikolo and his siblings were growing up without getting into much trouble. Even the farmer's daughter loved them; she gave them plenty of corn every morning. They could also eat little insects they found on the open grass. They were playing in the yard all day. Pikolo loved to tease and chase other chicks.
One morning, Pikolo woke up rather early. He could hear the "cock-a-doodle-doo" s of the grown up roosters of his farm. He went outside, stretched his legs and then, his wings, shook his head, and burst out a loud: "boboliboooo!"
His mother almost fell off her sleeping position on single leg. She came out with her chicks. His siblings started to look at him with big scared eyes.
- Cluck Cluck. What was that? BIGMAMA asked.
- Mama, I am old enough to announce the morning, Pikolo said proudly. "From now on, I will wake up the farmer's family."
- I see, said his mom in a worried tone and continued: "Then, you should learn how to do it properly."
That immediate day, BIGMAMA introduced him to Tuba, the best calling adult rooster in the village. Tuba was a handsome rooster, popular among the young females. He was a bit pompous but BIGMAMA was happy that he accepted to teach Pikolo his talent.
First, Tuba made a public show of his morning serenade at different tones. Then, Pikolo was ready to demonstrate his art. He stretched his legs, then his wings and yelled a loud "bobolibooo." Tuba looked at him with unbelieving eyes and a wide-open beak. Small chicks and hens and roosters gathered around them.
Pikolo was happy to attract their attention. But then, he felt embarrassed when they started to make fun of him. Their laughs got louder and louder until BIGMAMA yelled them to go mind their own businesses. She brought him home directly.

Pikolo was sad. His sisters tried to defend him but he was ridiculed by young roosters. For days, he stayed home and looked outside with misty eyes. He was too embarrassed to go out. BIGMAMA hen looked as if she was doing her daily chores but, in fact, she was worried about him.
That evening, after everyone fell asleep, BIGMAMA hen came to tuck him in. She caressed his wings and said:
- Don't conclude that they don't like you.
- But they made fun of me, he sighed.
- The problem is that we don't easily accept something that is different, even when it is better, she said, "You have a beautiful voice and I am sure you can learn the regular cock-a-doodle-doo."
The, she paused before continuing,
- But, if you think your call is better, then try to make it perfect. Just believe in yourself. Eventually they have to accept it.
Pikolo couldn't sleep that night. For hours, he tried to practice "cock-a-doodle-doo" quietly. But, he realized that the problem was not that he couldn't, he just didn't like it as much.
Could BIGMAMA be right? Would others learn to accept his different call? Should he, at least, give it a try? But, what if they start making fun of him again? He stood up awake all night trying to decide. With the first lights of sunset, he made up his mind to give it a try. What he had to lose? But he had to practice a lot to make it sound better.
The following days, everyone including BIGMAMA thought Pikolo forgot all about what happened. But he quietly continued practicing his unique call until he made it perfect.
One day, right before sunset, he decided to give it a try. He went out. The sun was about to rise. The villagers were slowly waking up. Farmer's wife was already out searching for fresh eggs for breakfast.
Pikolo stretched his wings all the way back. He now had the inspiration and courage to blow his long baritone "bobolibooooo."
All the chickens and roosters of the village started to gather around. A few roosters laughed. BIGMAMA came out with her chicks and stood right behind Pikolo. Suddenly, Farmer's wife shouted:
- My god! What is this?
Pikolo stepped back feeling embarrassed until she said:
- Do it again, do it again handsome!
She yelled her husband and daughter to come and listen to him. Everybody waited in silence. Pikolo opened his wings with proud. He was not afraid anymore to do what he believed was right. He looked at his mother and then, broke loose "bobolibooo" three times. Farmer's daughter started to clap her hands; everybody whooped with joy.
Then, the farmer approached with his left hand on his chin. He said he had never heard such a call before.
- He is one-of-a-kind, he said. People from other towns may come visit our farm to hear him. Hmm, he could be the new emblem of our village!
His daughter yelled with joy:
- Then, we must take good care of him.
Everyone cheered except a few who were jealous. Pikolo looked at BIGMAMA. She had the biggest smile he ever saw.
